Welcome to The Centers for Exceptional Children

Our mission is to educate, nurture and support children with special needs to reach their highest potential intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically.

In July, 2010, two extraordinary schools joined hands to create The Centers for Exceptional Children, bringing together more than 95 years of nurturing children with special needs. The Children’s Center and The Special Children’s School have been “Hallways of Hope” for thousands of children and their families.

The Centers for Exceptional Children (CFEC) are dedicated to serving children with developmental delays, orthopedic disabilities and other health impairments. Our mission is to educate, nurture and support children with special needs to reach their highest potential intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically. We accomplish our mission through providing developmentally appropriate education, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech/language therapy. In addition, both of our Winston-Salem, NC campuses provide nursing support, family support services, and numerous enrichment activities. The CFEC serves children and families in most of Northwest North Carolina.

Family Support Network of Greater Forsyth is an outreach program that further enhances The Centers for Exceptional Children. In 1987, FSN began to provide support to families who have children with special needs (medical, developmental, or other). FSN is affiliated with The Family Support Network of NC and currently serves Forsyth and surrounding counties. There is no charge for any service provided by Family Support Network of Greater Forsyth.

The Centers for Exceptional Children’s Schools

The CFEC encompasses two campuses: The Special Children’s School and The Children’s Center, each having a slightly different focus in serving children. The Children’s Center has predominantly served children with physical disabilities and/or significant medical issues. The Special Children’s School has focused its efforts on children with a wide range of developmental delays. In addition to preschool and school-age programs, The Children’s Center houses an Infant/Toddler Program which serves children from birth through age two.
