Give an Hour. Change a Life.
When we think about the lives touched by even just an hour of your time, we could not be more grateful. Our families are stronger because of your help and our children are happier. Here’s how you can help.
Join the Volunteer Readers Club
Share in the enjoyment of reading with our children by allowing them to follow along as you read aloud to them in an enthusiastic and expressive manner! This can be a single session or a recurring activity.
Support the Infant & Toddler Classes
The CFEC enrolls 40 children ages birth to 3 each year in our Infant & Toddler Program. The goal of the program is to provide developmentally appropriate education for very young children with special needs, as well as a complete range of therapeutic interventions.
Horticultural Therapy Projects
The Horticultural Therapy program is offered to all students at The Children’s Center and The Special Children’s School. Our sensory gardens are significant places of learning for the children. We often are looking for helping hands to keep our gardens looking and operating at their best – that includes planting, weeding, mulching and we can always use help from anyone with basic (or advanced) carpentry skills.
Assist in the Preschool
The CFEC is unique in that our preschool classes (children ages 3-4) use a reverse inclusion model. Our students with disabilities are able to make lasting friendships with typically developing students. The program motivates all children to improve their communication skills, meet social/emotional goals, and build friendships that will hopefully last outside of the classroom setting. Our program encourages students to embrace diversity and respect those who have challenges outside of their experiences.
Elementary Class Helpers
The Special Children’s School and The Children’s Center offer K-5 education to children with varying special needs. The curriculum in these classrooms are designed to help each child be successful and meet their individual goals. Volunteers are needed to help on field trips, during music and adaptive physical education, on the playground, or throughout the day in the classroom.
Extended Day & Summer Programs
The CFEC offers After School and Summer programs for children enrolled in The Special Children’s School and The Children’s Center. These programs are inclusive of children with and without special needs.
Support Our Families
We are always looking for volunteers to become a trained support parents so you can be available to other families who have children with special needs. We also need “Chat & Snack” hosts at Brenner Children’s Hospital and Forsyth Medical Center, where we host dinners for families in the NICU’s, and support at our community engagement events.
FORMS & DOCUMENTS
All volunteers must also register online with the WSFCS Volunteer website prior to volunteering.
