At The Children’s Center our gardens are used as outdoor classrooms. With nature as co-teacher, our students have the opportunity to increase their physical, social, and cognitive skills while outdoors. The horticultural therapist maintains the therapeutic gardens. Our goal is to have beautiful garden spaces throughout the school campus. That is where you come in! We are looking for individuals that love to create and maintain beautiful outdoor garden spaces. We need volunteers to help water, weed and plant various spots on campus. Have an hour? Water a container. Do you have more time to spare? Adopt a playground garden area to maintain. You will work closely with the horticultural therapist to discuss your volunteer needs and then you will be matched with an on campus project. You can create your own schedule. Interested? Please contact JoAnn Yates, HTR at email@example.com.
The Special Children’s School Horticultural Therapy Program has an outdoor classroom that provides first hand experiences to practice fine motor skills, communication, speech , and sensory stimulation. As our program has grown, so have our gardens around the campus! We have many places on our campus ” up for adoption”. Wonderful volunteers have created a bird garden, and a butterfly garden, just to name a few. We are also in the early stages of creating a Sensory Garden too! We would love for you to join us on our journey to creating a very special place at a very special school for very special children. Please contact Jennifer Manning, HTR at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 336-209-1290.
